What is the Opal Card for Children/Youth

The Opal card for children/youth is for children aged 4 to 15 years inclusively - it is an easy, convenient way of paying for your travel on public transport. It's the only card you'll need to get around on all public transport including trains, ferries, buses and light rail. The fares when using the Opal card for children/youth are usually 50% of the adult fares.
The Opal card is the only card for travel on all trains, ferries, buses and light rail in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter and Illawarra.

How can I save money with the Opal Card?

Weekly Travel Reward^*
Take 8 paid journeys from Monday-Sunday with an Opal card and pay only half price for all further travel in the rest of the week.
Off-peak train fares
A 30% off-peak discount on full price Opal fares applies to all train journeys taken:
- on weekends (up to $2.50 cap on Sunday)
- on public holidays
- before or after the weekday morning and afternoon peaks as below:
  - Sydney Trains network area: 7-9am and 4-6.30pm weekdays
  - NSW TrainLink Intercity services area: 6-8am and 4-6.30pm weekdays
Daily Travel Cap^*
With an Opal card you can enjoy travel all day for no more than $7.50 for Child/Youth Opal card holders from Monday to Saturday.
Sunday $2.50 Travel Cap (EUR 1.58)^*
Travel all day on Sunday with Opal for no more than $2.50. Travel as much as you want as an Opal customer and pay no more than $2.50 from 4:00am Sunday morning until 3:59am on Monday morning - you could even pay less than $2.50 with off-peak train fares!
Opal trip advantage^*
If you make several trips across the same mode of transport e.g. only ferries, only trains or only buses – you can take up to 60 minutes to transfer between trips, and only pay one fare for the journey. You could meet a friend or go to a quick meeting and, if your transfer occurs within 60 minutes*, it still counts as a single journey and a single fare.

^*Sydney Domestic & International Airport Stations : You can use your Opal card to travel to and from Sydney Domestic and Sydney International Airport train stations. When tapping on or off at Sydney Domestic or International Airport stations, a station access fee of $13.00 for Adult and $11.60 for Gold Senior/Pensioner, Concession and Child/Youth Opal card holders is deducted from your Opal card balance in addition to the relevant Opal train fare. This is the same fee that currently applies to paper tickets for travel to these stations. The Opal 60 minute transfer doesn't apply at Sydney Airport Stations. If you tap off at the airport and tap on again within one hour, you'll be charged for two journeys, including two Station Access Fees. This gives you two paid journeys towards your Weekly Travel Reward The Sydney Airport Station Access Fee does not count towards your Daily Travel Cap. The deduction of the station access fee may mean that your Opal card balance goes negative. If this happens you will need to top up your card to travel again.

How do I use the Opal Card?

Tap on / Tap off - just do it !

To travel with a valid ticket and pay the correct fare you must tap on and tap off using the Opal card readers at train stations, buses, ferry wharves, or at light rail stops.The only exception to tapping off is the Manly Ferry services as there is only one possible stop.
To begin an Opal trip, tap on by placing your Opal card on an Opal reader.
At the end of your trip, tap off in the same way and the correct fare is automatically deducted from your card.
Check the Opal reader display screen and listen for the ‘ding’ to confirm you’ve tapped on or tapped off correctly.
Detailled Explanations

When you tap your Opal card the Opal card reader screen will display one of three responses:
- A green light, a tick and the ‘OK’ audio tone (1 ding) means your tap on has been successful
- A flashing amber light, an exclamation mark and the ‘Alert’ audio tone (3 dings) means your tap on has been successful but your balance is getting low
- A flashing red light, a cross and the ‘Not OK’ tone (2-tone ding) means your tap on was unsuccessful and you need to top up your card value to travel
When you tap off at your destination the Opal card reader screen will display one of three responses:
- A green light, a tick and the ‘OK’ audio tone (1 ding) means your tap off has been successful; the fare deducted and your remaining balance will also be displayed
- A flashing amber light, an exclamation mark and the ‘Alert’ audio tone (3 dings) means your tap off has been successful but your balance is getting low; the fare deducted and your remaining balance will also be displayed
